Establishing a company's support for internal sustainability efforts (ISEs) like gender equality, diversity, and staff welfare can be challenging. The lack of operational methodologies and honest data documenting such efforts adds to the difficulty. To address this, we created computational methods to extract sustainability mentions from employee reviews.
We developed a framework to measure internal sustainability efforts (ISEs) using data from over 350,000 employee reviews of 104 major companies in the US from 2008 to 2020. Our deep-learning Natural Language Processing framework assessed these reviews and companies based on six ISE dimensions: infrastructure, diversity, education, atmosphere, health, and monetary aspects.
Our research showed that companies with high scores in these ISE dimensions also experienced significant stock growth. This suggests a strong dedication to ISEs at the individual company level. Our findings highlight the connection between internal sustainability efforts and financial performance, demonstrating the value of prioritizing ISEs.
